In one of the extended scenes, Aragorn is singing the Lay of Luthien, and says "'Tis the Lay of Luthien, the elf-maiden who fell in love with Beren, a mortal." The title of the song is "Lay of Luthien" and that really is what he says, yet the subtitles have him saying "'Tis the lady Luthien..."
Why? Why is it so difficult to get subtitles right?
And I don't only find it here of course. I watched Bride and Prejudice with the subtitles on and sometimes the subtitles are so wrong they are completely hilarious. (My favorite one is a line which is supposed to be "My mother can be a little abrupt" is rendered in the subtitles as "My mother can be a little grub.")
But why are subtitles sometimes done so badly?
Can you get a job editing subtitles for movies? I don't think I would mind that.
